So I’ve clearly been delinquent (sorry, Nadine). One of those weeks. The book was read but the post wasn’t written- Thanksgiving break has come not a moment too soon (for this blog).
It’s appropriate that today is the coldest and rainiest day in a long time, I guess, because the book this week was all about summer. I’m a fan of fall- love sweaters and scarves and boots- but this wintry mix is not ideal, especially after the tease of an unseasonable 70+ degree day earlier this week.
Sag Harbor revolves around protagonist Benji, who is part of a group of African American families who spend most of the year in the upper class of Manhattan and the summer out in Sag Harbor on Long Island. I won’t lie- the Long Island connection is what drew me to the book in the first place, but it involves an experience about which I know nothing. It’s culturally enlightening- frankly, for understanding the 1980s more than anything else.
I enjoyed it but was hoping to gush about it, especially on a post that is so relatively late. I just don’t have a lot to say about it. It’s good but not the greatest, compelling but not the most interesting, quick but not the fastest. Probably worth a read but not as much as some other books I’ve read lately.
You’ll like this if: you miss the summer and like Long Island.
Happy reading!
