My first introduction to Agatha Christie came in sixth grade, when we read And Then There Were None. I was absolutely gripped by the story. Maybe it was the quintessentially British writing in the height of the Harry Potter boom or the fact that we had just finished the worst book of all time (Watership Down) or perhaps that my mother got me the fancy leather bound version, but I loved it. It was the best book we read that year and one I went back to many times after that.
Browsing Amazon, it was surprising for me to realize that in almost 15 years, I’d never gone back to Agatha Christie to try something else out. The timing was great- for this past week, I needed something all-consuming, the kind of story I could throw myself into. It’s been pretty hard to get myself reading for this project given the applications I’ve been reading, so I was glad to get a book that was enticing enough to make me want to seek it out.
I won’t ruin anything, because if there’s anything Agatha Christie is known for, it’s complicated webs and twists and turns that are entirely unexpected. The book- as the name suggests- is about a mysterious murder that takes place on a train which just so happens to have a world-renowned detective as a passenger. The book takes you through all of the potential possibilities and interactions among the other passengers as they try to figure out who murdered a person on the journey.
In all, it’ll pull you in and moves pretty quickly. It brought me back to everything I loved about And Then There Were None and made me prefer Kindle time to TV time at the end of the day- no easy feat during reading season.
You’ll like this if: you like mysteries that you can never get in front of- she’ll keep you guessing until the very end.
Happy reading!
