It’s the first week of summer, but it’s also the end of my sort-of summer vacation (see above: new job), so with enough time to squeeze in a second read, of course it had to be something light…and a little dumb.
I legitimately couldn’t even remember the name of the book just now as I went to title this post- that’s how completely forgettable it is. The Knockoff is as the name suggests- fits the same formula as many, many summer reading books. Girl drama, guy drama, whatever.
There’s something that some authors do in these really beachy reads that bothers me a lot, and that’s when they name drop extensively and make themselves victims to the time period. Half of the references were dated as soon as the book hit the shelves and rather than seeming nostalgic, I’m sort of embarrassed for the authors that they think that this is a way to reach an audience. The story itself could have been compelling- learning to bridge generation gaps in the ever-changing world of media combines both of my academic fields- but it was pretty poorly executed.
Now, that’s not to say I totally disliked it. I liked the book just fine for what it was- a fast read for which I had super low expectations. I read it in a matter of hours over a stretch of two short days by the pool to get in a second book this past week. I really can’t recommend it highly because it’s just. so. silly. but if you’re looking for something a little mindless and awkward, pick it up.
You’ll like this if: you are less weird about near-constant name dropping of people you see in People.
Happy reading!
