Why Not Me? – Mindy Kaling (Week 69: September 13-September 19)

wnmOkay. You know the drill. A celebrity wrote a book. I loved it. Who’s shocked?

I’ll come out and say my favorite part about this book: she is confident as hell. And why shouldn’t she be? (That’s the entire point of the title.)

It’s easy to forget celebrities are people too, which is why US Weekly has their “Stars- They’re Just Like Us!” section in every issue. It’s fairly common knowledge that humans need food to survive, so it shouldn’t be weird to see Amy Schumer or Jason Segel go to the supermarket, but somehow that’s news. (Though if they were going together…I’d want to know about it. New favorite celebrity couple suggestion.) I’ll admit that that puts me in a weird spot, because on the other hand, I am super into celebrity gossip and pride myself on the ability to stay up to date with what’s going on in the lives of strangers. Maybe a good time to know when the line has been crossed is when I suddenly feel like it’s intrusive or offensive…?

In any case, Mindy is confident and feels real and while I swing further on the cynical scale than most people, I’m not convinced this is an act. She admits that there are parts of her life that are crazy-good and, let’s be honest, if you’re not going to be charmed by her casually dropping her various trips to the White House on the express invitation of the President, this is not the right book for you. And even more than that, she proves that she has worked super hard to end up where she is today and if anyone deserves this kind of insanely awesome life, it might be her.

I calculated and I read this book over the course of three days, solely on my metro commute. It’s light and compelling and of course I felt like it was all around perfect. Nadine mentioned that she might get the audio version of this book and I think that is truly the only way the experience could potentially improve, giving the feeling that Mindy is confiding in me personally, or offering me direct advice. It might be enough to make up for our collective disappointment in not getting to see Mindy in person in DC…

This is a definite must read for those who are looking for a little guidance from someone who’s been incredibly successful against some odds- just check out her American Express commercial if you’re not convinced yet. (Longer version here.) She has some really great insight that should be read, re-read and shared.
