So how many Emmys did this miniseries win? Half a million? Sure felt that way, so I figured I should probably check out…the book?
I was feeling a bit uninspired by my wish list (sad) and Olive seemed like a good enough answer. The Twitter world was ablaze with excitement on Emmy night and watching the series felt like too much of a commitment, so here we are.
It was a little tough to get into it throughout. That’s not to say I didn’t like the book, but the characters I was most interested in disappeared, leaving the reader with the ones I liked the least. I suppose that’s part of the point- after all, the book is called Olive Kitteridge for a reason, so it’d be weird for her to be the one to go, but…yikes, is she unlikable.
I was also having trouble keeping track of the year- in my mind, this was entirely a period piece, but there are frequent references to 9/11 and other current events. Perhaps I was a bit checked out reading it- I don’t feel like I’ve had as much time lately to really dive into the books I’m reading.
I think it was around this time last year when this happened, but it’s a little hard to engage with this project sometimes. Maybe it’s having a bunch of things to do at work or being distracted by other things going on, but this week I felt a bit blocked. I don’t know if it’s a lack of connection to the book or a lack of connection to the project, but I have high hopes for the coming weeks.
You’ll like this if: you like seeing a lot of characters develop over a long period of time. You have to also be okay with the fact that you’re not going to like everyone…or anyone, by the end of it.
Happy reading!
